Nevertheless, I have been silent since before Christmas. You’re welcome.

As you probably expected, I’ve been running Venezuela and redacting the Epstein Files until about a week ago. Then I started tanking bitcoin.

I do have less newsworthy excuses as to why I haven’t posted recently, and here they are: The flu, the holidays, (unexpected grief deluge,) college visits, the stomach bug, and life well … life-ing.

Once all of that passed, I started wondering what to write about after such a long break. And, I am stumped.

Let’s face it, the world is filled with NOISE.

Information is everywhere, even when you’re not looking for it.

It is exhausting.

I don’t know about you, but I am sick of people who think the world needs their two cents. And I really don’t want to be one of them.

But I am not giving up on virtual friendships. If we can’t be bothered to socialize from our preferred setting … well then, we are only hurting ourselves. And, if we want to live long enough to see Taylor Swift’s kids get married, socializing and connection are a must.

So, taking a step back, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what we can chat about this month, since February is the height of seasonal affective disorder, a.k.a. the blues. I’m a geek. Nerd. Dork. Whatever the kids are calling it. I’ve always liked school. I love to learn. Yeah, I said it: documentaries are my idea of a good time.

But still. Twelve hours of 18th-century war footage is a lot, even for me. So why am I still watching? Why am I now recommending it?

Because it’s fascinating. And because I realized that, until now, my understanding of the American Revolution was basically:

• King George = bad

• George Washington = good

• Thomas Jefferson = complicated

• North = no slaves

• South = slaves

• Betsy Ross = flag

• Ben Franklin = little glasses

That’s it. That was the whole story in my head.

What I’ve learned from this series is both deeper and messier—and honestly, way more relevant than I expected.

🧠 What the documentary reveals (that I never learned in school):

• The American Revolution was just as much a civil war as it was a war for independence. Families were torn apart over loyalty to the Crown. Daughters were disowned for marrying Patriots.

• The colonies were deeply entrenched in their own issues with the Crown, and folks from different colonies were so rivalrous, they barely got along. Washington was about how difficult it was to unite an army comprised of men who had no tolerance for opinions different from their own.

• Some of the American soldiers who enlisted were very, very young. One 15 year old boy left an account that is devestating.

And all of this—all of it—has echoes in the political fractures we’re still navigating today.

🎯 Why this isn’t boring, and why I’ll keep watching

I’m only six hours in, and I already understand the foundational contradictions of this country in a way I never did before.
Not through hot takes. Not through Twitter threads. Through actual historical context.

Burns himself said the project forced him to revisit everything he thought he knew about the Revolution.

Why I’m Really Here

I started this newsletter to create an income stream.
And then I ran straight into my own imposter syndrome — or maybe just the reality that I can’t charge people for something I wouldn’t personally pay for. My ethical wiring simply doesn’t allow it.

A month on Substack has taught me a few things. For starters, there seem to be three kinds of winning newsletters:

1. I am incredibly rich; copy me and you will be rich too.

2. I am incredibly smart; here are the five steps you must take to be smart like me.

3. I have a billion subscribers; it’s easy, babe, just follow my funnel.

And then there’s the earnest group saying:
“Just tell your story. People want to hear it.”

Okay, sure — but I’m not totally convinced.

Seven Days, Seven Topics, One Confused Algorithm

When I started Compass & Counsel, my plan was clean and simple: seven days, seven distinct lanes. Legal on Monday, Modern Motherhood Thursday, Italian traditions Saturday, and so on.

It was a lot of work — but it kept me focused.

It absolutely did not keep the algorithm focused.

Because here’s the truth:
You must teach the algorithm how to categorize you.
An author who writes about seven different things a week confuses the poor machine.

(The humans? They seemed okay. The machine? Absolutely not.)

So I studied the algorithm — and immediately regretted it.

Every time I walk past my TV and see an ad for the exact thing I texted my sister about three hours earlier, I get that “followed” feeling. Because I am. We all are.

So I built a system — a fun one — to filter out the stories my algorithm wants to show me, and instead surface the stories that get suppressed.

This part fascinates me:
There is information out there that I don’t see because it doesn’t match my “marketing profile.” And that makes me slightly crazier than usual.

Thus began the daily feed of stories the algorithm hid from you.

And I know your next question:
How do YOU know what my algorithm hides?
I don’t.
But I do know these systems intimately — the segmentation, the targeting, the signals that decide what gets shown and what gets buried.

I know where the blind spots usually land.

So What Do You Want to Read?

I have no idea.
But I do know this:

If you’re exhausted before breakfast and can’t remember what task you were doing 15 seconds ago, you’re not lazy. You’re running a full logistics operation inside a brain that was never wired for executive function overload.

This post is for the moms doing it all, and blaming themselves for not doing more.

What I Was Going to Do Today

I was going to plan dinner.
I was going to clean the bedroom closet.
I was going to text that one mom back.
I was going to check on my kid’s ACT location.
I was going to start that thing I wrote in my planner six days ago.
I was going to start the planner.

But instead?

I leaped from bed at 5:30, full of energy and promise.

I did some social media promotion for a client.

By 8:30 AM, I was so tired, I needed a nap.

I woke up at 10 and accidentally spiraled into a 45 minute podcast on the origins of the exclusion principle in particle physics which, obviously, made me think of chicken salad.

I took at least 30 minutes to make a very intricate, restaurant-quality chicken salad from last night’s leftover chicken.

Then, I didn’t feel like eating anymore, so I decided to write.

Intention ≠ Execution — Especially for ADHD Moms

This is what ADDitude Magazine calls Intention Deficit Disorder — the gap between wanting to do something and actually doing it. It’s not because you don’t care. It’s because your brain hits a traffic jam every time it tries to connect the idea with the action.

As Dr. William Dodson explains:

“ADHD is not a disorder of knowing what to do. It’s a disorder of doing what you know.”

Which, frankly, would be fine if the stakes weren’t so high. But when you’re a mom, and three humans and a dog’s emotional regulation, final exams, volleyball practice, and tonight’s dinner all depend on you remembering how to function — that gap isn’t just frustrating. It’s debilitating.

Wait, What Is Intention Deficit, Scientifically Speaking?

“Intention Deficit” isn’t a formal diagnosis — it’s a term clinicians like Dr. William Dodson use to describe one of the most misunderstood aspects of ADHD: the gap between knowing and doing.

The root issue is with the brain’s executive function system — the set of cognitive processes responsible for organizing, prioritizing, initiating, and completing tasks.

ADHD disrupts the neural circuits that regulate dopamine, especially in the prefrontal cortex, which means motivation isn’t driven by logic or consequence.

Instead, the ADHD brain is activated by interest, novelty, challenge, or urgency. So when you genuinely want to do something — like clean the kitchen, file paperwork, or answer an email — but your brain doesn’t register it as immediately stimulating or rewarding, you can’t start.

It’s not a failure of discipline. It’s a neurological bottleneck.

The Mental Load Is Already Too Much

Let’s review the default mom job description in 2025, I call this the micro. The small, daily details that never really stop:

• Meal planning and grocery runs

• Cooking, cleaning, and remembering where everyone’s stuff is

• School drop-offs and pickups

• Managing the kids’ social calendars

• Monitoring homework and grades so the kids get into college

• Scheduling every dentist, doctor, therapy, and hair appointment

• Answering questions like “What’s for dinner?” 19 times in one hour

• Working. Probably. (In my case, I'm constantly on edge because I can’t find work.)

• Aging parents. Maybe. (Which, in itself, is paralyzing in its obligation)

• Trying to maintain adult friendships. In theory.

And if you’re in an ADHD family — where either you or your child (or both) have a neurodivergent brain?

Add:

• Supporting your kid through homework meltdowns

• Managing executive function tasks for four people

• Navigating 504s, IEPs, or specialized instruction

• Translating between your child’s world and the school’s expectations

• Wondering if it’s even possible to be calm and regulated when your nervous system is shot

The Macro

I now know I was in fight-or-flight mode for most of the last 20 years. Until I got him safely into the right school, his circumstances took up just about every inch of my brain space. Then, my mom got sick. By the time I realized my daughter was struggling with everything from social to schoolwork, I’d already been at it for about ten years. Rinse and repeat it all until she was in the right school. Then, my dad started failing. He passed away two weeks before I dropped my son at college 5 hours away. This coincided with my daughter’s junior year and college search. There, you’re caught up on the macro.

Moms Aren’t Allowed to Melt Down

When your kid with ADHD can’t finish their essay because they’re stuck on paragraph one, you jump in to help.
When your partner’s overwhelmed at work, you pick up the slack.
When your home looks like a Lego tornado met a library fire sale? You tell yourself you’ll clean it after bedtime.

But what happens when you’re the one who hits the wall?

There’s no school intervention plan for mom. No social-emotional curriculum. No weekly OT to help you remember where you left your debit card. Or, in my case, your wedding rings.

So you push through. You mask. You stay up late “just trying to catch up.” You feel like a failure for never catching up.

And that’s how moms burn out — with a brain that won’t stop thinking, a body running on fumes, and a guilt system that punishes rest as laziness.

ADHD Looks Like This, Too

A lot of people think ADHD means bouncing off the walls or forgetting your keys. But in moms, it often looks like:

• Decision fatigue so intense you skip dinner

• Analysis paralysis over which doctor to book first

• Task inertia where you can’t even start folding laundry

• Shame spirals because you meant to do better

• Hyperfocus on low-priority tasks (hello, editing my daughter’s Taylor Swift coloring book)

• Avoidance when everything feels too heavy

Before my mom passed, I was still in stage one of the macro. My son’s day-to-day was all-consuming. She told me to stop worrying about his future and to celebrate how far he’d come. She would be incredibly happy to know she was right, of course.

In the moments when I see the cluttered kitchen counter, the stacks of unopened mail, and I swear I cannot possibly send out one more resume, I look around and try to appreciate what I did get right. I waited for the right husband, who is a great dad. And, I have two incredibly successful, brilliant kids, who will just have to take care of me in my old age.
